3 options to consider when starting a tutoring business

3 options to help you start a tutoring business

July 18, 20243 min read

When you start your tutoring business you have 3 options.

Depending on your hopes and dreams, time, budget, the route you take will vary. If you only intend to work a couple of hours a week to brink in some extra income, option 1 or 2 might be right for you. If you have huge dreams and you want to change the world, you would probably be better looking at options 2 or 3.

There is not generic right or wrong answer, it is unique for everyone. But I hope this inspires you to think, plan, and do whichever is best for you:

Start a tutoring business

1.       Jump in and get started.

Follow your instincts and your plan and see what happens working it out as you go. If you move your business forward you will inevitably arrive somewhere and hopefully in the process will create the business of your dreams.

2.       Find a mentor or coach

to guide you as you start along the path to building your tutoring business. With their help and guidance, you will inevitably come across far fewer obstacles as they will be able to guide you and safely take you around them. (I started with option 1, then quickly moved to option 2 and me that made a huge difference to the business I had started, and things got moving far more quickly, and efficiently both with time and money).

3.       Franchise

Know the style of tutoring you want to do, know the subjects you want to support, know what you want to earn and what you can afford to spend. Then look to see if there is a tutoring franchise that ticks the boxes that you are aiming for. Be wary if you have to deviate too far from your goals for the franchise to work as you will become disillusioned with it over the long term. But if you think all 3 could be good matches, it’s worth looking at further.

A franchise will save you a lot of money and time as you are working with systems and the support of a business who has already put in the ground work, and although it may appear to be a large upfront investment, calculate how long it will realistically take you to pay it back, because if you can afford it, it will probably be a lot cheaper than the mistakes you will make through trial and error, creating a website, training, etc, etc.

School term is nearly at the end, and this may be the moment you decide to make the change in your life which has been so long in coming. If it is good luck and please if you choose a franchise make sure it’s the right one because although it might save you time and money, it could cost you so much heartbreak and annoyance if your philosophy to supporting learning doesn’t align.

If you want to chat about any of these 3 options, send me an email: [email protected] and we can arrange a time.

If nothing else, when you say your thoughts out loud it often clarifies what you want in your own mind.

For the past 20+ years I have been a firm believer that learning should be an enjoyable experience. I appreciate that traditionally education has revolved around worksheets, textbooks, listening to teachers. But a grounding in early years and working with children who had a variety of learning styles from I learned that it is an individual activity that is personal to all of us. We don’t all learn in the same way. Our influences, our experiences, our capabilities all influence how we retain information. But through it all, I believe that if we can make it enjoyable and engaging, they will want to participate. With participation comes practice which in turn boosts skill and confidence. With an increase in skill and confidence comes a willingness to have a go. This in turn leads to more practice which leads to a positive spiral of success. The moral, we need to make learning fun, engaging, use a range of techniques.
